THE PALACE OF ILLUSIONS : A BOOK REVIEW
THE PALACE OF ILLUSIONS
- BY CHITRA BANERJEE
THE PALACE OF ILLUSIONS is a masterpiece which narrates the well-known story of MAHABHARATA but with a new angle .The story of this book is the same ancient story of two warring cousins which ultimately ends with the most catastrophic war in the kurukshetra region of INDIA.The story is being told from the point of view Draupadi. In this book,Draupadi is not depicted as a victim but as a game-changer.
The writing style of the author is so elegant and beautiful.Best thing about this book is that the writer has been wonderfully successful in blowing reader's mind by narrating the incidents in super poignant way .I think this book is a must-read for all the feminists out there. The story in this book revolves more around Draupadi unlike other versions of Mahabharata where it is more about the males of the epic.
This book got widely praised by international magazines like the NEW YORK TIMES.It portrays Draupadi as powerful, determined and virtuous. She is represented as a controlling woman .
Chitra has moulded the original version of the story in such a way that it holds relevance in today's patriarchal society of India.I was really inspired by DRAUPADI'S character. What i did not like about the story is an unnecessary establishment of a chemistry between Karan and Draupadi. It was totally non-essential.
Overall, the book is worth-reading and will absolutely change your perspective on the pic - MAHABHARATA.
