Elections are the cornerstone of any democracy. As India is the largest democracy in the world, it is all set to witness the largest democratic elections in 2024. General elections in India will be conducted for 543 Lok Sabha seats over April, May, and June. It will be held in 7 phases with phase 1 voting on 19 April and phase 7 on 1st June. More than 90 crore Indians are eligible to vote in these elections.  In this article, all about General Elections 2024 is explained. 

General Elections 2024
General elections are held in India every five years to elect 543 members for Lok Sabha. Lok Sabha is the lower house of the Indian parliament. It is also known as the House of the People. India follows the first-past-the-post system of polling where the party that gets the maximum number of votes wins and forms government. 

Who is running?
India follows a multi-party system. There are more than 2500 political parties in this country. But only 10 political parties occupy nearly 80 percent of the seats of Lok Sabha. In General elections 2024, major parties contesting the elections include incumbent Bhartiya Janata Party, Indian National Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, etc. 

Phases of Elections
Elections for the 543 constituencies of Lok Sabha will be held in 7 phases with first phase starting on April 19 and last phase ending on 1 June. Each phase will las for 1 day only. More than a million polling stations have been deployed for the smooth conduct of the general elections 2024. 



Announcement of results
Results will be announced on June 4.

What do surveys say?
According to a pre-poll survey by Lokniti-centre for the study of developing societies, BJP is more likely to win these elections as compared to it major opponent Indian National Congress. In this survey, 4 out of 10 voters supported BJP. Additionally, BJP holds a commanding 12 percentage points lead over the INDIA alliance.
